A Temple toast

In celebration of Russell Conwell’s 172nd birthday, Temple will be hosting Temple Toast, a series of events happening all day Tuesday around Main Campus. The 24-hour birthday party will be coupled with an online campaign for donations to the university.

Parties will happen throughout many Main Campus buildings Tuesday, including the Fox School of Business, the College of Science and Technology and the Howard Gittis Student Center.

“Titanoboa: Monster Snake” exhibit at the Academy of Natural Sciences

The fossilized remains of the extinct “Titanoboa cerrejonensis,” the largest snake in the world at 48 feet long and 2500 pounds, is now available for viewing at the Drexel’s Academy of Natural Sciences. Attendees can crawl through the length of the snake in“Titanoboa” challenge, check out live specimens from the Academy’s collection and learn about venom, fangs and scales from experts.

The exhibit will run through April 19 and costs $3 to enter, in addition to the museum admission fee of $15.95.

Fair Food to host bread-making demonstration at Reading Terminal

Philly Muffin baker Pete Merzbacher will be sharing his culinary talents Feb. 25 with a sourdough bread-baking demonstration at Reading Terminal Market.

Hosted by Fair Food, the class will teach participants the basics of bread crafting from the ground up. In addition to complimentary drinks, event-goers will also be sampling sweets courtesy of Philly Muffin. Additionally, participants will be granted all the ingredients needed to bake their own bread upon leaving as a parting gift. Tickets will cost $35, and the event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Rex 1516 celebrates Mardi Gras with new food items

Rex 1516, a Southern-inspired restaurant on South Street, is headlining the Mardi Gras celebration today with some special items, like gumbo with house-made andouille, shrimp po’boy and their Citywide Burger served on a king cake roll. Refreshments include their $6 passion fruit Hurricanes made with aged rum, passion fruit, cranberry and orange and lime juices

The restaurant will be open from 5 to 11 p.m

Midnight Madness at Ritz at the Bourse

Every Friday night through the rest of February and March, the 400 Ranstead St. location of the Ritz Bourse movie theater chain will be hosting midnight screenings of some nostalgic classics.

On Feb. 20, the Ritz will be showing 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with special live shadow cast Transylvania Nipple Productions, who will act out the whole movie and sell prop bags for $2. For those brave enough, the $10 screening also includes a lingerie contest.

Philly Cooks 2015 to be hosted at the Marriott

Foobooz will be hosting its annual Philly Cooks event Feb.18 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.

The event will grant participants access to the food of over 30 participating restaurants in the Philadelphia area. General admission tickets are available for $100 via Eventbrite.com. The event will run from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. All in attendance must be 21 or older.

Exclusive tasting tours are also available, in which event-goers are given exclusive access to some of Philadelphia’s top rated restaurants. The tours will run Feb.16 and 17, where access will be granted to three restaurants per tour day.

“Ink and Gold: Art of the Kano” open now

A new exhibition, “Ink and Gold: Art of the Kano” opened Feb. 16 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The exhibition highlights the work of the Kano painters, who were established in the late fifteenth century and noted as artists from “the most enduring and influential school of painting in Japanese history.” The exhibition will feature gold leaf folding screens, ink paintings and other large works. The exhibition, which features more than 120 pieces, will be on display until May 10.

Underground arts hosts fire person arts story slam

Underground Arts is hosting the annual “First Person Arts Storyslam: The Ex-Files” on Feb. 14. Each year, First Person Arts hosts the comedic event where audience members have the chance to share stories of heartbreak and lost love on a day typically reserved for celebrating romance and relationships. Audience members judge those brave enough to share their story. The winning storyteller receives $100 and a ticket that serves as entry into First Person Arts’ Grand Slam held in May.

Tickets start at $11 for First Person Arts members.

“Oscar” opens at the Academy of Music this february

Opera Philadelphia will host the East Coast premiere of “Oscar” at The Academy of Music on select dates starting Feb. 6 through Feb. 15. The opera follows the downfall of writer and poet Oscar Wilde as he is charged and sent to prison for his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. Events will take place around the showing of the opera, including a special event on Feb. 13 that focuses on LGBT issues around the time of Wilde’s life.

Tickets for the opera start at $19.

EXHIBIT ON KENNEDYS comes to THE Constitution Center

A new exhibition coming to the National Constitution Center, “Creating Camelot: The Kennedy Photograph of Jacques Lowe,” will highlight the photojournalist’s work documenting the lives of the Kennedy family while President John F. Kennedy was in office. 70 photos will give viewers a look inside the relationship Lowe had with President Kennedy and his wife and daughters. A film documenting Lowe’s work with the Kennedy family will be shown alongside the photographs.

The exhibition opens Feb. 13.
