South Street Spring Festival coming May 3

Science Festival encourages sky gazing

Juvenile court scandal highlighted at Eastern State Penitentiary

“The Searchlight Series: Conversations About Crime, Justice, and the American Prison System” at the Eastern State Penitentiary hosts free, public discussions from 6-7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. The Searchlight Series will host William Ecenbarger and Marsha Levick on Tuesday, April 1. William Ecenbarger, former reporter for “The Philadelphia Inquirer,” will discuss his book, “Kids for Cash.” Published in 2012, “Kids for Cash” highlights a juvenile court scandal in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Marsha Levick, Deputy Director and Chief Counsel from the Juvenile Law Center, led legal efforts for those affected by the scandal. World Water 5K Run/Walk will be held on March 22

Philadelphia’s 5th World Water Day 5K Run/Walk is starting again on March 22. The walk is sponsored by Keiyo Soy Ministries, an organization that raises funds to provide for “clean water, sanitations facilities, and hygiene education in the Kerio Valley in the Rift Valley Province of northern Kenya.”

Catch the discounted student entry fee of $20, normally $25 on race day.  The event starts on Martin Luther King Drive at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Celtic Nights come to the Annenberg Center

The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania is hosting “Celtic Nights: A Night of Music, Song and Dance at the Zellerbach Theatre” on Saturday, March 15 at 8 p.m. Ticket prices vary, and the lowest priced seating is $20. The performance explores Celtic heritage with some of Ireland’s renowned musicians, singers and step dancers.

Philly Improv Theater shows off

Philly Improv Theater is showcasing its talents at The Adrienne Theater on the 2000 block of Sansom Street on Friday for a “Variety Comedy: Story UP! After Dark” performance. This is a chance to see the cast in a new light “as they put the swear jar away and put their inner child to sleep.”  Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. The show runs from 10:30-11:30 p.m.

The 185th Philadelphia Flower Show starts March 1

The Philadelphia Flower Show from March 1-9 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on 12th and Arch streets. Tickets are $20 online with a valid student ID.  This year marks the 185th year of the Philadelphia Flower show, which claims the name of the world’s largest indoor flower show with 10 acres of arrangements.

Wistar Institute and Eastern State Penitentiary offer affordable activities for Valentine’s Day

The Wistar Institute at 3601 Spruce St. opened the Nikon Small World Photography Exhibition on February 3. This exhibition showcases microscopic photographs showcasing nature that would not be seen by the naked eye alone. Tickets are free. Stop by from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m Monday through Friday until March 7.

Afterward, stop by Fairmount’s Eastern State Penitentiary. ESP is offering special discounted Valentine’s Day tours from February 14-16. Tickets are buy-one-get-one free if purchased in advance online. General admission tickets for students with ID are $10/ticket.
