The residency at the Mann Center begins with this Philadelphia favorite. Cristian Măcelaru, conductor, and Hai-Ye Ni, primary cello, will perform some of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved work, like Swan Lake, while fireworks light up the sky. The Shambles is hosting a new, free movie series over the summer. The monthly series also features an ever-changing list of local restaurants and food trucks to complete the outdoor event with alfresco dinner. The Muppets Take Manhattan will kick off the screening series. Supper, People on the Move

Featuring new work by choreographer Silvana Cardell, this performance is inspired by migration and “explores the complex experience of dislocation.” The dance focuses on the human experience throughout the world and the journey of immigrants. In addition to the performances at Crane Arts, there is an accompanying exhibit at Independence National Historical Park focusing on area immigrants with a free screening of the dance performance. Philadelphia artists Kelly Franklin and Carol Jarvis explore the wit and timelessness behind Benjamin Franklin’s phrases written under the pseudonym “Poor Richard.” The opening reception for the show, a translation of Franklin’s “text with symbolism and a deep-rooted love of nature,” is this Friday. One of the region’s largest outdoor festivals returns this coming weekend with over 300 artists and vendors. ‘The Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival’ returns to Fairmount

The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia hosts the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival as a celebration of Japanese food, art, music and culture. The festival emphasizes the Japanese tradition “ohanami,” which includes parties with entertainment, food and drinks under the blossoming cherry trees in celebration of Spring’s return. Festival events include ikebana flower arranging, demonstrations of martial arts, a silent auction, the Cherry Blossom 5K, sushi-making classes, Dine Out Japan restaurant week, live music, dance performances and more.

The festival will run April 6-12 and the main event, Sakura Sunday, will be held on April 12 at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park.

South Street Headhouse District hosts Easter events

Celebrate Easter Sunday with a day of festivities at South Street Headhouse District’s 84th annual Easter Promenade on April 5. The free parade starts at 12:30 p.m. on Passyunk Avenue and South Street, ending at 2nd Street Plaza, and includes music from the Philadelphia Freedom Band. A Bunny Hop event and prizes will be awarded for best-dressed contests. A Easter menu brunch at restaurant spots on South Street will also be available.

Food trucks and music return to the Porch at 30th Street

University City’s Porch at 30th Street Station is celebrating warmer spring weather with a month of specially featured food trucks and lunchtime entertainment. Throughout April, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., two different food trucks will serve lunch every day. Tuesdays through Fridays will feature performances from a variety of artists.

On April 2, there will be hoop dancing and food from Farm Truck and Sum Pig food trucks.

SquareBurger reopens for 2015 season in franklin square

The Stephen Starr-owned burger stand, SquareBurger, made its return to Franklin Square on March 21 in preparation for its 2015 season. Known for its signature Cake Shake, made with Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpet, vanilla ice cream and a swirl of butterscotch, SquareBurger also features a classic lineup of burgers, hot dogs and fries. The restaurant hours for the rest of March are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and from April to October, opening and closing times vary, which are listed on the official website.

New taco shop, Buena Onda, opens in Fairmount

Philadelphia Iron Chef Jose Garces opened his latest restaurant, Buena Onda, on March 16. Garces, an influential member of Philadelphia restaurant culture, has a long history of culinary achievement in and outside of the city. Garces’ latest spot will primarily feature fish tacos inspired by fish found on the Baja peninsula of Mexico, as well as nachos and quesadillas. All fish at Buena Onda is sustainably sourced.

Tacos start at $3 and .50 cents from every order of guacamole and bottled water purchased will be donated to the Garces Foundation.

TreePhilly Event at Yards Brewing Company

TreePhilly is a Philadelphia Parks and Recreation initiative that aims to increase tree growth in the city and improve air quality by giving homeowners free trees to plant anywhere on their property. Each spring the initiative holds a free tree giveaway, and this year, it will kick-off with a “Tree for All Party” in celebration of spring.

The event will be held March 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Yards Brewing Company. It will feature local brews, host tree-themed activities and hold tree-planting discussions in preparation for the free tree pick-up held April 11 at Bridesburg Recreation Center and Eastwick Regional Park.

Victory Brewing Company’s beer ice cream sampling

Local brewery Victory Brewing Company has been giving out free samples of their beer-inspired ice cream throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Their next stop is at the DiBruno Bros on Chestnut Street on March 13. Ivy Hunter, Victory Brewing Company’s merchandise coordinator, will be scooping out samples of Storm Drop, Triple Monkey and Hopped-Up Devil ice cream, all created from non-alcoholic wort.

The tastings will be available from 5-7 p.m.
