Olivier Burton leads talk in Gladfelter Hall

The Center for the Study of Force and Diplomacy is sponsoring a talk with Olivier Burtin on Tuesday from 3:30-5 p.m. Burtin will lead his lecture “World War II and the Re-Invention of the American Legion, 1940-1945” and focus on a forgotten episode in U.S. history with the internal operations of the American Legion during World War II. Created in 1919 by and for veterans of the Great War, the Legion opened itself to the new generation of World War II veterans after a contentious debate among its members. Burtin’s discussion will take place in the Weigley Room on the ninth floor of Gladfelter Hall. It is open to all, and no registration is required.

Discussion centers on Christina Baker Kline’s “Orphan Train”

There will be a discussion held tomorrow from noon to 1:30 p.m. about this year’s One Book, One Philadelphia selection, Christina Baker Kline’s “Orphan Train.”

The story follows Vivian, a 91-year-old widow once orphaned as a child, and Molly, a troubled teen being sent around from one unstable foster home to another.

The novel depicts an era in which thousands of orphaned children were taken from crowded cities to face uncertain futures in the rural Midwest. The discussion will take place in the ground floor lecture hall of Paley Library. This event is free and open to all.

Tyler student life offers free bus trip to ACC craft fair

There will be a free bus trip to Baltimore ACC Wholesale Craft Fair Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. The bus will depart from 13th and Diamond streets and will leave Baltimore at 6 p.m. to return to Philadelphia at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The trip is open to all Temple students, but Tyler students are especially encouraged. This is an excellent opportunity for any Tyler student who is thinking of selling at small galleries in the near or distant future.

Tickets are available at the front desk of Tyler School of Art. This trip is sponsored by Tyler Student Life.

Serc to hold student and alumni networking night

The Student and Alumni Networking Night will begin Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Science Education Research Center Lobby. Alumni will help students build their networking skills, professional connections and confidence as they prepare to set out in today’s job market.

All alumni participants will be entered into a raffle to win an iPad mini. All student participants will be entered into a drawing to win several awards, including a $500 gift certificate to Macy’s.

This event is worth 10 Leadership Diamond Points. Both students and alumni are asked to register through the Career Center website prior to attending the event.

Tyler hosts Mardi Gras celebration

The Tyler School of Art will be celebrating Mardi Gras in the Tyler building Tuesday at 10 a.m. Enjoy free King Cake and coffee while participating in the spirit of Mardi Gras.

Free masks and beads are offered to all attendees. At 11 a.m., there will be a Spam & Tofu carving contest, with a prize awarded to the winner.

The Mardi Gras celebration is free, but anyone looking to participate in the carving contest must email Kari Scott in advance, at miss.kari@temple.edu. This event is sponsored by Tyler Student Life and is open to all students.

A Temple toast

In celebration of Russell Conwell’s 172nd birthday, Temple will be hosting Temple Toast, a series of events happening all day Tuesday around Main Campus. The 24-hour birthday party will be coupled with an online campaign for donations to the university.

Parties will happen throughout many Main Campus buildings Tuesday, including the Fox School of Business, the College of Science and Technology and the Howard Gittis Student Center.

“Represent: 200 Years of  African American Art” debuts at PMA this January

A new exhibition highlighting a collection of work from African American artists opened on Jan. 10. Featuring art from a span of two centuries, the exhibition is available to view through a guided tour as special events are also set to take place throughout the next couple of months.

On Jan. 16, the musical quintet, Sound Reformation, led by Darryl Yokely, will be performing and on Jan. 18 in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Celebration. The exhibition will run through April 5.

1812 Productions to host a new political comedy

1812 Productions, a Philly theater company, will show its newest political comedy, “This Is The Week That Is” through Dec. 31 at Play’s and Players Theatre.

The comedy group used the 2014 midterm elections as inspiration for its latest show, which aims to keep audiences up to date on current national and local politics, by using satire.

Tickets start at $26 and vary in time depending on the day. Information about the show and how to purchase the tickets can be found on the group’s website.

Temple contemporary holds ‘conversation with the artist’

    Brooklyn-based Brazilian artist Valeska Soares will be speaking at Temple Contemporary in the Tyler School of Art on Friday at 3 p.m.

Soares is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Her work is predominantly in sculptural practice, but her portfolio also includes photography, film, installation and collage. Soares is represented by Galeria Fortes Vilaça in Sāo Paulo, Eleven Rivington in New York and Max Wigram Gallery in London. Her latest exhibition “Any Moment Now” ran from Oct. 12 to Nov. 23 in New York. Soares will be speaking with Tyler art history professor Adele Nelson. This event is free and open to all.

Trio Combray to perform in Rock Hall

  Trio Combray will be performing a faculty and guest artist recital on Thursday evening from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Rock Hall auditorium. Trio Combray includes violinist Gregory Fulkerson, cellist Jeffrey Solow and pianist Jeffrey Swann.

     Fulkerson is a professor of violin at Oberlin College, where he graduated in 1971 before continuing his studies at the Julliard School. Solow is the current president of the Violonocello Society, Inc. of New York and former president of the American String Teachers Association. He is a professor of cello and chamber music and former chair of the Department of Instrumental Studies at Temple. Swann is also a fellow Julliard alumnus and currently serves on the piano faculty at NYU. The Trio Combray performance is free and open to all.
